Temporary Home Care

There are several recovery care options to consider after an injury, illness or medical procedure, and you may decide that the best choice is to secure temporary home care. When making this significant decision, it is essential to consider the different types of home care services available and how to pay for them.a man standing in front of a building

What Is Temporary Home Care?

Temporary, or short-term, home care can provide support services as you recover in your home. Those recuperating from an accident, sickness or surgery may receive individualized assistance depending on their needs.

There are many forms of temporary home care, and each may provide different types and levels of services. Examples include:

·        Nonmedical home care—This may include personal care, companion care or a combination of these two services. Personal care typically refers to physical assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs), such as getting dressed, taking a bath and using the restroom. Companion care usually refers to the provision of companionship, conversation and emotional support.

·        Home health care and skilled nursing care—These types of care are provided by licensed professionals and may refer to home administration of medicine, physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy. While some providers may offer assistance with ADLs, home health care and skilled nursing services may focus on specialized medical care.

Specific services you receive may vary by provider, and it is essential to thoroughly research what types of care are available. This can help ensure you are receiving the assistance that fits your needs.

Paying for Home Care

When researching home care options, it is important to build a financial plan to cover the associated expenses. The following is general information to keep in mind:

·        Standard disability insurance policies typically do not directly pay for temporary home care (medical or nonmedical care).

·        Private health insurance plans vary with regard to home care coverage, although most limit their coverage of skilled care (e.g., do not provide 100% coverage) and do not cover nonmedical services.

·        Individuals who qualify for Medicare may receive financial assistance for temporary skilled-care services (e.g., skilled nursing services or therapy) provided specific criteria are met (e.g., the individual is homebound and a doctor has prescribed the services).

For more information on how to pay for home care services, contact our agents or a certified financial planner, as they can help you explore various options.
